February 24 - On a visit to the local "packy" I verified that Dale's Pale Ale was indeed sold at the Pier and other offerings from the Oskar Blues brewing Company. But my eyes stopped on a pint sized beer with a large red tag around the neck that read 9.5% Alc. by volume. And being a Rhode Islander the name was tempting as well - "Lobster Lovers Beer." At three dollars I thought I would give it a try. The label has a female with her back turned toward you and a lobster covering much of her body. I would love to know the inspiration of the design. I discovered that there is a porter as well but have not spotted it in any store. See the following URL for information from the importer.
http://www.aikoimporters.com/products/items/?categoryid=37 This beer is considered a European strong lager and falls into the category of American malt beers of high alcohol content. I thought the comparison interesting because the taste is so different to their European cousin. This beer had a golden straw color with a crystal clear appearance. The head quickly dissipated from the glass leaving a champagne like head fueled by tiny bubbles. The tiny exploding bubbles explode into a sweet malty aroma that does not reveal the strong alcohol content. I would say it is best sipped and allowed to linger in the mouth. However, it is a very smooth drinking beer for its style. By the way, did I mention alcohol? The taste is almost absent in fact but that sweet corn taste of an aged bourbon finds its way to the top then leaves a lingering sweet malty finish. It is as though you can taste rock candy and your lips smack for a new sip. I did get peppery notes as well that added to the depth of this sweet malty beer. All in all it is a beer that does require a taste for strong lagers but would be an excellent introductory beer for those seeking to widen their beer palate. As far as pairing it with a lobster, summer is coming and I plan to steam a few dip the succulent meat into a bath of warm butter and sip gently on a cold glass of "Lobster Lovers Beer" to allow the flavorful sensations to dance on my palate. I tried their "Before and After" offering. I will be honest and say that the label caused me to buy the bottle. The label shows a not so attractive women when viewed as a "Before" and an attractive women as a an "After". This offering is quite strong and I know it would cause a 2 to be a 10, as the song states.
ReplyDeleteAt 10 she was a 2, at 2 she was a 10. (That applies to women sizing up men also.)
